Second place was won by four students, Athanasios Kapsalis, Zacharias Mitzelos, Nikolaos Potaris and Christos Christou from the Information and Communication System Engineering Department of Aegean University in the European competition "Galileo & Copernicus Innovation Challenge" held on 1-3 December in Helsinki, Finland, as part of the European Space Week.
The students used data and earth observation technologies, in particular Copernicus data, to design and present innovative ideas and applications which offer solutions to real problems, relating to valid prediction and emergency response.
The Greek students won second place for the submission of a proposal for the prediction and management of floods and fires, two issues that directly affect our country as well as a mechanism to reduce the response time of civil protection in emergencies.Their award includes six months of free access to satellite data, which will contribute to the further development and implementation of their idea.
