Greek student first in the World Mathematics Competition

The Greek student of the Mathematics Department of the University of Athens, Georgios Kotsovolis, stood out among 350 students from all over the world.

Another important distinction for Greek universities. A Greek student of the Mathematics Department of the University of Athens, Georgios Kotsovolis, managed to win the gold medal in the 25th IMC (International Mathematics Competition) held in late July in Blagoevgrad, Bulgaria.

This is the second consecutive year that a Greek student has won the gold medal in this competition, a unique event in the history of the University of Athens.

This is a significant success which adds to a series of successes of students of the Department of Mathematics and the University of Athens in similar competitions.

The
International Mathematics Competition
, is the world’s largest mathematics competition for students and is organised by University College London. It has been conducted since 1994 with the participation of leading universities in the USA and Europe. Students compete two days in 5 problems a day. 350 students took part in this year’s competition.

The students of the Department of Mathematics of the University of Athens have been participating since the academic year 2007-08, with significant successes every year. It is worth noting that the participation expenses of Georgios Kotsovolis were covered by the Municipality of N. Ionia.
