EVA algorithm with Greek signature helps in pandemic control

29.07.2020

The EVA algorithm, a complex artificial intelligence model, has been developed by a multidisciplinary team of researchers to ensure that the opening of tourism does not compromise the safety of citizens and visitors due to pandemic COVID-19. The EVA algorithm, which is used by the Greek state, has been voluntarily designed by an excellent team of scientists, consisting of

, Vishal Gupta (University of Southern California), Hamsa Bastani (Wharton University of Pennsylvania) and Yannis Vlachogiannis (founder of AgentRisk).

The algorithm, taking into account the number of tests per entry point, uses the epidemiological picture from the public data of each region, combined with the test results at the entry gates, to assess the risk profile of each traveller based on the PLF(Passenger Locator Form) data. EVA aims both to identify passengers who have an increased likelihood of being carriers of the virus, and to sample and monitor all countries and regions to quickly identify new epidemiologically-affected profiles.

Special reference to the EVA system was made by the Deputy Minister of Civil Protection, Nikos Chardalias, during the weekly regular briefing on the progress of the spread of the virus in the country. “To ensure that the opening up of tourism does not jeopardise what we have created the EVA algorithm,” he said. According to the EVA’s “indications”, from July 1 to 26, a total of 171,138 checks were carried out at the country’s entry points, out of a total of 1,294,798 arrivals in the country, and the number of confirmed cases is 344. Of these, 70 are still active, 213 have returned to their country of origin and 61 are no longer active and remain in our country.
